The Wonderful Statue of Christ The Redeemer

The statue of Jesus Christ named as Christ the Redeemer, is located in Rio de Janeiro. The statue is regarded as the true symbol of Christianity and is considered as the icon of Rio as well of Brazil. This gigantic statue which measures 130 feet in height is situated at the peak of the Corcovado Mountain which is 700 meters above sea-level.

Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss was the first person who suggested the construction of this enormous sculpture as a great religious memorial and this notion actually took birth as early as the middle of the 1850s and he asked Princess Isabel to finance this construction, who did not give much regard to this notion. It was in the second proposal started by the Catholic Circle of Rio in 1921 that donations and signatures were collected for the mere purpose of this construction and the idea was given due consideration.

Christ The Redeemer Overlooking Rio

The construction of the statue was actually carried out by the local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa while the French sculptor Paul Landowski created this statue. It took nine years to realize this dream and the total cost of the construction is equivalent to today’s $250,000. The monument was opened for public viewing on October 12, 1931 and has indeed turned out to be a major attraction of Rio de Janeiro.
